As a Laboratory Veterinarian, you will be responsible for the health and welfare of animals utilized in laboratory settings for research, testing, and teaching purposes. You will ensure compliance with ethical standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices in laboratory animal care. Your role involves providing veterinary care, overseeing research protocols, and collaborating with researchers to optimize animal welfare while achieving scientific objectives.
A Day in the Life
Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Supervise and monitor the health and well-being of animals in laboratory settings in accordance with established protocols and regulations by conducting regular health assessments and providing veterinary care when necessary. This includes diagnosing and treating illnesses, managing pain, and providing preventive care such as vaccinations.
- Ensure compliance with ethical standards and regulatory requirements governing the use of laboratory animals in training and ensure compliance with record-keeping requirements and data integrity standards.
- Facilitate ethics committee reporting and approval processes for research protocols, prepare reports for regulatory agencies as required.
- Lead negotiations for internal and external training programs to ensure ethical conduct and coordinate with stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and efficient use of resources.
- Develop and manage anaesthesia protocols for laboratory animals undergoing procedures or surgeries, and train staff on proper anaesthesia administration and monitoring techniques to minimize pain and distress during surgical procedure while ensuring adherence to safety protocols and best practices in anaesthesia management.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of animal care activities, including health assessments, treatments, and procedures while implementing enrichment programs to promote the psychological and behavioural welfare of animals.
- Lead various aspects of lab operations, including equipment calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Create and run training scenarios for laboratory staff, manage simulation sessions and provide support as needed to ensure effective training outcomes and continuously improve training programs based on feedback and performance evaluations.
Must Haves
3+ years of relevant industry experience required.Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from veterinary university. Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field.License to practice veterinary medicine in the jurisdiction of employment.Knowledge of laboratory animal science, including animal behaviour, physiology, and pathology.Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, laboratory staff, and regulatory agencies.Commitment to ethical principles and animal welfare in research and teaching.Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced laboratory environment.Capable to manage complex organization requirements.Nice to Haves
Certified as laboratory animal usage.Knowledge of management of biomedical devices and simulation machines within laboratories.Ability to respond to urgent or changing business needs in a dynamic environment.We Offer
